Why Your Pool Remodel Is Failing: 5 Technical Mistakes Most Contractors Make
5 technical mistakes most pool contractors make

You finally did it. You searched for "pool remodeling companies near me," found a guy with a truck and a decent price, and spent your hard-earned savings turning that tired 1990s concrete box into a modern backyard oasis. But now, just two seasons later, you’re seeing it: a hairline crack snaking across the steps, tiles popping off like buttons on a tight shirt, and a white, crusty film bleeding through your beautiful stacked stone.
Is your pool missing the "pop" it had when it was brand new? Or worse, is it literally falling apart?
At Idaho Pool Remodeling, we’ve seen it all. With over 25 years of experience right here in the Treasure Valley, we don't just fix pools; we often have to "re-remodel" them because the first contractor cut corners they didn't even know existed. When it comes to swimming pool renovations near me, the difference between a 20-year finish and a 2-year failure is all in the technical details that most general contractors ignore.
Here are the five technical "silent killers" of pool remodels and how we avoid them to keep your backyard safe and beautiful.
1. Structural Cracking: It’s More Than Just a Surface Issue
If you see a crack in your pool, your first instinct might be to think it’s just the plaster. Sometimes it is (we call those "check cracks"), but often, it’s a sign of a structural failure.
Many pool restoration companies will simply plaster over an existing crack without investigating why it happened. In Idaho, our soil can be tricky, and the freeze-thaw cycle is brutal. If the bond beam (the thick concrete ring at the top of your pool wall) is cracked, simply putting new finish over it is like putting a Band-Aid on a broken leg.
When we perform swimming pool inspections, we look for structural integrity first. If we find a real structural crack, carbon fiber staples and high-strength epoxy injections to "stitch" the pool back together. Most contractors skip this because it’s expensive and time-consuming, but without it, that crack will return: guaranteed.
2. The Nightmare of Non-Waterproofed Raised Beams
Raised beams: those beautiful walls that stick up above the water line, often featuring waterfalls or planters: are a huge trend in Boise right now. They look amazing, but they are a technical minefield.
Water is a persistent traveler. Through a process called "capillary action," water from the pool will actually soak into the concrete of a raised beam and "wick" upward. If that beam wasn't properly waterproofed on the back side and the top side before the stone or tile was applied, that water will eventually push the stone right off the wall.
Even worse, as the water evaporates, it leaves behind minerals (efflorescence) that create those ugly white stains you can't scrub off. We ensure every raised beam is treated with professional-grade waterproofing membranes. It’s an extra step, but it’s the only way to ensure your interior finish and masonry stay attached for the long haul.
3. Expansion Joints: The "Bumper" Your Pool Needs
This is perhaps the most common mistake we see from general landscaping contractors who try their hand at pool work. In Idaho, we experience massive temperature swings: from 100-degree summers to sub-zero winters. Everything in your backyard is expanding and contracting.
Your pool structure and your "field decking" (the big concrete patio around the pool) are two separate entities. They move at different rates. If a contractor doesn't leave a dedicated expansion joint: a gap filled with flexible material: between the pool coping and the deck, you’re in trouble.
Without that joint, the massive weight of your concrete patio will literally "push" against the pool coping as it expands in the sun. This results in:
- Coping stones getting pushed into the pool.
- The top row of tile snapping off.
- Cracks forming in the pool wall.
We call this "deck heave," and it’s a primary reason why we emphasize proper decking installation. We always install a true expansion joint with high-quality Mastic to act as a shock absorber. Safety is always number one, and a shifting deck is a major trip hazard!
4. Ignoring TCNA Standards for Tile Installation
Did you know there is a "Bible" for tile work? It’s called the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook.
Most contractors treat pool tile like a kitchen backsplash. But a pool environment is much more aggressive. The tile is constantly being hit by chemically treated water, UV rays, and ice. Most failures happen because the contractor didn't achieve "95% coverage."
In your bathroom, you can get away with spots of thinset behind a tile. In a pool, those empty spots (voids) trap water. When that water freezes in a Boise winter, it expands and pops the tile right off the wall. We follow strict TCNA standards for pool tile installation, ensuring there are no voids where water can hide. It’s the difference between a "pretty" job and a "professional" job.
5. Poor Material Choices: The Saltwater Trap
Saltwater pools are incredibly popular because they are gentle on the skin and eyes. However, salt is highly corrosive.
Many contractors use standard thinsets and grouts that are rated for "submerged use" but not rated for salt environments. Over time, the salt penetrates the grout, reacts with the chemicals in the thinset, and turns the adhesive into mush. Suddenly, your expensive glass tile is sitting at the bottom of the pool.
At Idaho Pool Remodeling, we are experts in material science. We use specific epoxy-modified thinsets that are chemically resistant to salt and high chlorine levels. We also recommend advanced finishes like ecoFinish or AquaMax for owners who want the ultimate in durability and chemical resistance.
Why Experience Matters in the Treasure Valley
You wouldn't hire a heart surgeon who has only read a book about hearts, right? So why hire a general builder for a specialized hydraulic structure like a swimming pool?
With over a quarter-century of experience, Scott Heusser and the team at Idaho Pool Remodeling understand the physics, chemistry, and local climate factors that affect your pool. Whether it's a commercial pool remodel or a residential backyard project, we bring an "expertise level" that the "pool guys" just can't match.
We are Certified Pool Operators, which means we understand the water chemistry that can make or break your new plaster finish. We don't cut corners because we live here, too (and we’d rather see you at the grocery store and get a high-five than a complaint!).
Don't Let Your Remodel Become a Regret
If you are planning a renovation, don't just look for the lowest bid. Look for the contractor who talks about expansion joints, waterproofing membranes, and TCNA standards. Those are the details that protect your investment.
Is your pool showing signs of these technical failures? Or are you ready to start a remodel the right way the first time?
