Keeping Boise Families Safe
National water safety month & the PHTA's Step into swim program

Is your pool missing the "pop" it had when it was new? Or maybe you’re just getting it ready for another gorgeous Idaho summer? As the weather warms up and we head into May, we start thinking about more than just clearing out the leaves and checking the chemistry. In the pool industry, May is a huge deal because it’s National Water Safety Month.
Here at Idaho Pool Remodeling, we live and breathe pools, but safety is always number one. Whether you’re over in Meridian enjoying a quiet backyard oasis or right here in the heart of Boise prepping for a season of neighborhood BBQ splash parties, keeping our community safe in the water is what matters most.
In this post, we’re going to dive into why water safety is so critical, chat about a fantastic program called "Step into Swim," and give you some practical, local advice on how to make your home pool the safest spot on the block. (And don't worry, we'll keep it more fun than a middle school health class!)
What is National Water Safety Month?
Every May, the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) joins forces with safety experts across the country to remind us all that while pools are for fun, they require respect. It’s a time to brush up on our skills, check our equipment, and make sure we’re doing everything we can to prevent accidents before they happen.
Think of it like "chip seal season" for your safety habits, you might not love the prep work, but it’s what keeps the road ahead smooth and safe for everyone!
The Power of the 'Step into Swim' program
One of our favorite parts of being members of the PHTA is supporting the Step into Swim program. If you haven't heard of it, this initiative is dedicated to one very simple, life-saving goal: teaching kids how to swim.
Statistics show that formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by up to 88% in children aged 1-4. That is a massive number! Step into Swim works to provide grants and support to learn-to-swim programs all over the country, ensuring that every child has the chance to become "water competent."
Is your little one ready to make a splash? Enrolling them in local Boise swim lessons isn't just about getting them to do a perfect butterfly stroke; it’s about giving them the survival skills they need to stay safe if they ever end up in the water unexpectedly. (Plus, it’s a great way for them to burn off some of that "summer break energy"!)
5 Layers of Protection for Your Boise Home Pool
When it comes to drowning prevention, the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) talks about "Layers of Protection." You wouldn't just rely on a single lock on your front door, right? The same goes for your pool. You need multiple barriers to ensure everyone stays safe.
Here are the five key layers every Idaho homeowner should have in place:
1. Constant, Capable Supervision
We’ve all been there: you’re at a party, everyone is chatting, and you assume someone is watching the kids. This is where "silent drowning" happens.
- The Water Watcher: Designate one adult as the official "Water Watcher." This person wears a lanyard or holds a specific item (like a bright whistle) and does nothing but watch the water. No phones, no books, no "just one second" conversations.
- Hand-Offs: If the Water Watcher needs a bathroom break or a refill on lemonade, they must physically hand off the "Water Watcher" badge to another responsible adult.
2. Secure Fencing and Barriers
Your pool should be a fortress! (Okay, a beautiful, landscaped fortress.) A four-sided isolation fence is the gold standard.
- Self-Closing, Self-Latching Gates: These are non-negotiable. The gate should always open away from the pool so a child can’t accidentally push it open.
- Alarms: Install alarms on any doors or windows that lead directly to the pool area. If a door opens, you want to know about it immediately!
- Safety Covers: If you’re not using the pool, keep it covered with a certified safety cover: not just a thin solar blanket that can be a hidden hazard.
3. Swim Skills & Water Competency
As we mentioned with the Step into Swim program, learning to swim is a fundamental life skill.
- It’s Not Just for Kids: If you’re an adult who isn't a strong swimmer, there’s no shame in taking lessons! It makes you a better supervisor and gives you more confidence when the family is in the water.
- Continuous Practice: Skills can get rusty over our long Idaho winters. Make sure the first few pool sessions of the year focus on refreshing those survival skills like floating and treading water.
4. Emergency Preparation
Safety is always number one, but being prepared for the "what if" is equally important.
- Learn CPR: Every pool owner (and frequent guest) should be CPR certified. It’s a small time investment that can literally save a life.
- Rescue Equipment: Keep a reaching pole (shepherd’s crook) and a life ring right by the pool.
- Phone Access: Keep a charged phone nearby specifically for calling 911 in an emergency.
5. Proper Pool Maintenance & Inspections
A safe pool is a well-maintained pool! If your water is cloudy, you can't see what's happening at the bottom.
- Clear Water: Ensure your filtration system is working perfectly. Our swimming pool maintenance services can help keep your water crystal clear and chemically balanced.
- Drain Covers: Check that your drain covers are VGB-compliant (it’s a federal law!) to prevent suction entrapment. If you aren't sure, it's time for a professional swimming pool inspection.
Why Professional Certification Matters
You wouldn't hire a mechanic who hasn't seen a modern engine, so why trust your pool to someone without the right credentials? At Idaho Pool Remodeling, we aren't just pool builders; we are Certified Pool Operators (CPOs) and proud members of the PHTA.
Being a CPO means we’ve gone through rigorous training to understand the complex chemistry and mechanical systems that keep a pool safe and healthy. We even offer Certified Pool Operator training courses for those looking to take their professional skills to the next level.
Whether we are performing a complete pool & spa remodel or applying a beautiful, slip-resistant ecoFinish AquaBright installation, we are always looking through the lens of safety and long-term durability.
