ecoFinish vs. Traditional Plaster
This is a subtitle for your new post

If you live in the Treasure Valley or anywhere in the great state of Idaho, you know our weather has a bit of a split personality. We go from 100-degree July afternoons where the asphalt feels like it’s melting, straight into sub-zero winter nights that can freeze pipes in a heartbeat. It’s tough on our roads (hello, chip seal season!), it’s tough on our homes, and it is especially brutal on our swimming pools.
When your pool surface starts to look a little tired: maybe you’re seeing some staining, some "checking" (those tiny cracks), or your kids are complaining about "pool toe" from a rough floor: you’re faced with a big decision. Do you stick with traditional plaster, or do you move to something more modern like ecoFinish (AquaBright)?
I’m Scott Heusser, and at Idaho Pool Remodeling, we’ve seen how both of these materials handle the Boise freeze-thaw cycle. If you’re trying to figure out which one is the better investment for your backyard oasis, you’re in the right place. Let’s break down the pool plaster vs ecofinish debate and see which one actually holds up when the Idaho elements start throwing punches.
The Idaho Climate Challenge: Why Plaster Struggles
Traditional pool plaster has been the "gold standard" for decades. It’s essentially a mix of white cement and crushed marble. When it’s new, it looks clean and classic. But here’s the secret the industry doesn't always lead with: plaster is porous.
Think of plaster like a very dense sponge. It’s constantly absorbing water and reacting to the chemicals you put in the pool. In a place like Florida or Arizona, that’s one thing. But in Idaho? Our extreme temperature swings cause the ground to shift and the pool shell to expand and contract.
- The Freeze-Thaw Nightmare: When water gets into the pores of your plaster and then freezes, it expands. This leads to spalling, cracking, and delamination.
- UV Degradation: Our high-altitude Idaho sun is intense. Traditional finishes can fade and become brittle under constant UV exposure.
- Chemical Combat: Because plaster is alkaline, it’s constantly fighting your water chemistry. You’ll find yourself dumping more acid into the pool just to keep the pH from skyrocketing.
Is your pool missing the "pop" it had when it was new? If you’re seeing white dust or rough patches, that’s the plaster literally breaking down.
What Exactly is ecoFinish (AquaBright)?
Before we dive into the comparison, let’s talk about what we’re actually installing. When people look for aquaBright installation, they are looking for a thermal-sprayed high-performance coating.
Unlike plaster, which is "smeared" on and then takes weeks to chemically cure underwater, ecoFinish is High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) powder that is heated and sprayed onto the prepared pool surface. It bonds instantly. It isn't a paint, and it isn't a liner. It’s a non-porous, flexible finish that creates a seamless waterproof barrier.
If you’ve read any ecoFinish reviews idaho residents have posted, you’ll notice a trend: people love that it’s ready to swim in almost immediately. You can check out some of our local projects in our gallery to see the finished look.
1. Durability: Handling the Expansion and Contraction
In Idaho, flexibility is everything. Your pool shell moves. If your finish is rigid (like plaster), it’s going to crack. It’s not a matter of "if," but "when."
ecoFinish is designed to be flexible. It’s a polymeric finish, which means it can handle the slight shifts in your pool shell caused by our crazy temperature swings without popping off or cracking. Because it’s non-porous, water can’t get "inside" the material to freeze and cause damage.
Safety is always number one, and a durable finish means fewer sharp edges and cracks that can catch a toe or harbor algae. When we perform swimming pool inspections, the most common failure we see in older pools is plaster that has simply given up after a decade of Idaho winters.
2. Chemical Use: Keeping Your Wallet (and Skin) Happy
This is where the long-term cost savings really start to show up.
- Traditional Plaster: It’s a "living" finish. It’s constantly leaching calcium into your water. This forces you to use more chemicals to keep your water balanced. If your balance is off even a little bit, the plaster starts to stain or scale.
- ecoFinish: It’s pH neutral. It doesn’t react with the water. Because it’s non-porous, algae has a much harder time "rooting" into the surface.
Most of our clients who switch to ecoFinish report using up to 40% fewer chemicals. That’s less money spent at the pool store and more time enjoying the water! If you're tired of the chemical rollercoaster, a non-porous finish is a total game-changer for swimming pool maintenance.
3. Comfort: The "Pool Toe" Factor
We’ve all been there: your kids spend three hours in the pool, and they come out with raw, bleeding toes. We call it "pool toe," and it’s caused by the abrasive nature of worn-down plaster.
Plaster is essentially sandpaper. Over time, as the cream coat wears off, the aggregate underneath becomes exposed and sharp. ecoFinish has a unique texture. It’s slip-resistant (so you won’t slide around on the steps), but it’s smooth to the touch. It feels more like a high-end countertop than a sidewalk.
4. Maintenance and Long-Term Value
When you’re looking at pool resurfacing boise options, you have to look past the initial quote. Plaster is usually cheaper upfront, but it has a shorter lifespan: usually 7 to 12 years in our climate before it needs serious work.
ecoFinish is designed to last. It doesn't mottle, it doesn't stain easily, and it’s much easier to clean. If you ever do get a chip (maybe you dropped a heavy wrought-iron chair in the pool: it happens!), we can actually patch ecoFinish and most of the time can blend the patch. With plaster, a patch always looks like a patch.
For commercial properties, this is even more critical. Our commercial pool remodels often prioritize ecoFinish because the downtime is so much lower, and the durability is much higher under heavy bather loads.
5. The Installation Process: Speed Matters
One of the biggest headaches with a traditional remodel is the "curing" phase. With plaster, you have to fill the pool immediately and then spend the next two weeks "brushing" the pool twice a day while carefully balancing the chemicals to prevent the plaster from ruining.
With an aquaBright installation, the "cure" happens the second the material hits the wall. We can start filling the pool as soon as we’re done spraying. No two-week "hot start" with chemicals, and no endless brushing. You get your backyard back faster!
Is ecoFinish Right for You?
Look, I’ll be honest: if you’re just looking for the absolute lowest bid to get a pool "sell-ready," traditional plaster might be your route. But if you plan on living in your home and actually using your pool for the next decade, ecoFinish is the superior choice for our Idaho climate. It handles the cold, it survives the heat, and it makes your life as a pool owner significantly easier.
We love seeing these pools "come to life" with a fresh finish. Whether you're looking for a vibrant blue or a modern grey, the color stays true and won't fade like old-school finishes.
